The hearing assessment clinic is one of only a handful of places that your pets hearing can be tested in the UK. It is run by Kate McMorris, B.Vet.Med, Cert.V.Ophthal, MRCVS at Seadown Veterinary Hospital in Hythe.
The test is performed using the Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) technique which can tell you if your dog or cat has hearing loss, which ear is affected, the location and the severity of the disorder. From this information, either treatment can be suggested to cure or improve the hearing loss, or advice given regarding training and management.
Certain breeds are more prone to being affected by hearing loss, and some breeders will bring litters of puppies or kittens to be checked before sale. This can be combined with the Kennel Club Eye Scheme tests performed by Ian Mason at the practice once weekly.
